Roumiana Taslakowa
Born in Sofia, at the age of seventeen, Roumiana Taslakowa managed to immigrate to Germany; therefore condemned to 6 years in prison by the communist regime as a traitor and fugitive to the Republic.
In Germany, Roumiana Taslakowa graduated in economics and Slavic studies and in 1963 began working at radio station Deutsche Welle, which until 1989 was one of the most important information sources in Bulgaria. For ten years Taslakowa is editor in chief of the Bulgarian capital program of Deutsche Welle. Thanks to her personal commitment during the democratic integration in Bulgaria and afterward, Deutsche Welle has become a major platform from which non-communist leaders in Bulgaria can speak freely and be heard in the Bulgarian and European air.
From 2008 she is an independent journalist. Among the recognition she received for her activities are some of the following awards: "Prize of the Union of Journalists in Bulgaria "Podkrepa" on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day in 1997" and "Special Award for contribution in the promotion and objective presentation of the European theme in Bulgarian Radio Journalism", awarded in 2008 by the contest "Bulgarian Europe", organized by Arena Media in Ruse.
She is an author of three books: "Muted thoughts", "25 questions - Surveys and "Two decades of transition - Bulgaria through the eyes of German diplomats.
